In the first picture the middle box is focused while the other two are kind of blurred out and in the second picture the first box is focused while the other two are kind of blurry and last but not least, the final picture has all three boxes focused. The aperture is what controls the change in depth of field of the picture. The bigger the number the smaller the aperture so if you had f/16 you're going to have more area of space focused in while a smaller aperture such as f/1.8 will give you a less amount of space focused in the picture.
